21st Century holds National Honor Society inductions

21st Century Charter School held its annual National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony Friday evening. 17 new National Honor Society members were inducted this year, so 21st Century’s NHS chapter now has 20 high school members. In addition, 16 National Junior Honor Society members were inducted, bringing 21st Century’s NJHS chapter to 23 middle school members.

Returning members Lynden Richardson, Tierra Jackson, Aleisha Norwood, Tyronda Bandy, and Lawrence Billups shared original speeches on the five NHS/NJHS Core Values: character, leadership, citizenship, service, and scholarship. As each core value was introduced, a candle was lighted to represent it.

Assistant Principal Molly Robinson then spoke, challenging the NHS and NJHS members to make leadership and service integral parts of their lives. Then the new members were officially inducted by the NHS/NJHS Faculty Council: Ms. Laws, Mr. Keilman, Mrs. Ishman, Mr. Ford, Mrs. Rothermel, Ms. Dilosa, and Ms. Joens. The ceremony closed with the NHS/NJHS pledge and remarks from the NHS/NJHS Faculty Advisor, Mr. Ball.

To be invited to apply for NJHS, students in grades 6-8 must first have achieved an average of 88% mastery in math, science, language arts, and social studies, along with 85% mastery in elective courses. To be invited to apply for NHS, students in 10th grade must have achieved a 3.3 GPA, students in 11th grade must have achieved a 3.1, and students in 12th grade a 3.0. The application required an essay, four teacher recommendations, and lists of extracurricular, leadership, and service activities. NHS and NJHS members will now regularly take part in service projects throughout the year.
