The first semester of school is almost over at 21st Century Charter School @ Gary, and teachers are getting into the holiday spirit! Each middle and high school teacher decorated their door to show how Christmas is celebrated throughout the world – from Zimbabwe to England, El Salvador to China.
Among the doors decorated for Christmas celebrations, there was one in honor of the African historical and cultural celebration of Kwanzaa.
Teachers covered their doors with lights, drawings, posters, and pictures.
The first semester of school is almost over at 21st Century Charter School @ Gary, and teachers are getting into the holiday spirit! Each middle and high school teacher decorated their door to show how Christmas is celebrated throughout the world – from Zimbabwe to England, El Salvador to China.
Among the doors decorated for Christmas celebrations, there was one in honor of the African historical and cultural celebration of Kwanzaa.
Teachers covered their doors with lights, drawings, posters, and pictures. There were Christmas wreaths, a tree, and even cookies and milk set out for Santa. In addition to these festive decorations, teachers added some education into the mix – each door featured information on how Christmas is celebrated internationally. Students learned that in Spain, Christmas Eve festivities are interrupted by the ringing of church bells at midnight, calling families to their congregation for La Misa del Gallo (The Mass of the Rooster) service, named for the only time a rooster crowed at midnight – on the day Jesus was born. In Egypt, Santa Claus is called “Baba Noel”. And in Mexico, Christmas presents aren’t exchanged until Día de Reyes (Three Kings’ Day), on January 6th! Mr. Velasco, High School AP History and Government teacher, won the Christmas door decoration contest for his door on Mexico. Congratulations to Mr. Velasco, and to the staff and students of 21st Century Charter for a successful semester!
